Financial Issues
Financial difficulties are very common.
If your tutee runs into problems you could alert them to the following:
Access to Learning Funds (ALF)
Government Funds, usually given in the form of non-repayable grants, to home students who, after having taken out the full student loan are still experiencing difficulties. Forms are available in the College Office, the Student Support Office and the Students’ Union Advice Centre.
Commercial Bank Loans and Overdrafts
You could point out to your tutee that it is more convenient to have their account at a local Lancaster branch; it costs even more money if they have to travel home to see their bank manager. It is sometimes more economical to negotiate a bank loan than run up an overdraft.
Furness College Loans
Furness College is able to loan small amounts (up to £100) if the student’s overdraft has exceeded its limit and all other sources have dried up.
Students should approach either the Senior Tutor or the College Administrator if they need to apply for a loan.
Strike fund
In very exceptional cases, the Senior Tutor may refer your tutee for a discretionary grant. This fund is not always available as it represents funds
